The SYSCom track

SYSCom is the communication-systems track inside the 3EA department. It is where the electronics foundation turns into radio: lines and matching, passive microwave structures, propagation, then the modulation and signal processing that sit on top of them.

  • RF and microwaveTransmission lines, impedance matching, the Smith chart, S-parameters, passive structures including couplers and dividers, and circuit design in Keysight ADS.
  • Electromagnetic propagationGuided and free-space propagation, and the boundary conditions that decide what a structure radiates.
  • CommunicationsModulation, demodulation, link behaviour and the relationship between an RF chain and the quality of the link it carries.
  • Signal processingDeterministic and random signals, estimation, filtering and the numerical tools that go with them.
  • ElectronicsAnalogue and digital electronics, amplification, filtering, oscillators and phase-locked loops.
  • Embedded and instrumentationMicrocontrollers, acquisition chains, sensors and laboratory measurement practice.

Laboratory and project work

A bench-heavy track: the same structures are computed, simulated and then measured.

  • SimulationKeysight ADS for circuit and passive structure design, including budget analysis on a chain.
  • MeasurementVector network analyser work on lines and passive circuits, with the measurement compared against the simulated response.
  • Academic projectsTwo RF design projects carried out inside the track have their own pages: a frequency-conversion chain and a Ku-band satellite payload.
